Victorian
Victorian is not really a style but a period in history. The Victorian era dates from about 1840 to 1900. During this time, industrialization is changing society and culture and bringing innovations in architecture. At the same time, personal incomes are increasing and people are able to afford a higher standard of living, which includes building and decorating homes. Victorian style is a comglomerate of styles, usually combining one or more period styles into a structure, and frequently having fanciful details. It is often characterized by lacey ornamentation on the exteriors, as well as pointed arches and other gothic elements, and interiors are intimate, featuring classical ornamentation in many combinations of styles.

A Swag is a carving that imitates folds of drapery; it is usually placed over a doorway, mantel, at the top of a mirror, or other openings. Designs for swags vary, but this commission detailed that a shell would be placed in the center between the left and right sides of the drapery, as the unifying element.
