About Sarah | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A native of Columbus , Georgia , Sarah Rowe lived in New Orleans, Louisiana for ten years. It was in New Orleans , in a warehouse studio on the third floor over a gallery on Royal Street , that she began her career as a sculptor in stone and wood. Her work has been purchased by private individuals, corporations, churches, and museums. While attending the University of New Orleans working toward a degree in Fine Arts, she met Vero Puccio, a second generation Master Italian carver and furniture maker, and became his apprentice in his shop near Lake Pontchartrain . Sarah returned to Columbus in 1984 and established her studio here. From 1987 to 1991, she worked as an architectural carver and assistant to P.E. Reynolds, The Woodworks, custom architectural Millwork. In 1989 she was panelled by the Georgia Council for the Arts, and accepted into their Artists in Residence educational program. The panelling process combined a rigorous examination of her work with personal interviews conducted by a panel of selected artists and arts professionals. She was certified in both Fine Arts and Fine Crafts, a unique honor. Over the years, Sarah has worked with the Columbus Museum as a speaker for docent training programs, describing her work as a sculptor in stone and wood, and as a teacher in the Museum's ongoing teacher education program. Additionally, the Museum has purchased what Sarah describes as a ‘master work' in mahogany with multi-media. In May 2007, Sarah attended a two week session at the renowned Geisler-Moroder School of Woodcarving in Elbigenalp, Austria, studying techniques in narrative relief carving with wood sculptor Pascal Wirth. Sarah works with individuals, designers, cabinetshops, and architects who are restoring or preserving historic homes and commercial buildings, or who are constructing new ones. Additionally, she repairs broken or deteriorated carvings on antique furniture and millwork, and is equally comfortable with traditional or contemporary designs. Sarah's work blends fine art with fine craft, resulting in traditional or contemporary architectural carvings which are beautiful. functional, and enduring.
